Impossible constructor online

A new online constructor of impossible figures was opened as a part of community of the site Impossible World. The constructor allows to design your own impossible figures from cubes in Oscar Reutersvärd style. The figure designer is on the screenshot below.

You can choose, which corners you want to cut from the cube by selecting appropriate cubes at the line of blue cubes at the top of the toolbar. Then you can drag cube by mouse from the drag area to workspace. Cubes on workspace overlaps each other in order of drop.

You can save your figure by clicking on diskette button, and then post your figure to the common blog of the Impossible World community.

Note, that impossible figure constructor is supported by Google App Engine and you should have a Google account to create your figures. But you can see figures by other members of community freely.

Cubic pyramid

A nice pyramid of cubes was modeled and rendered by David Pearson (fpsurgeon). Each lower level of the pyramid consists of smaller cubes, which are four times more than above. So we see a simple but elegant fractal. This nice rendering was created as a further development of studing by author an open source program Structure Synth, which provides creating 3D structures from a set of user rules. One of preliminary studies you can see below.
Imagine if the top cube of the pyramid is too heavy, and the whole structure will collapse.

Black cube by Gregor Schneider

German sculptor Gregor Schneider was fascinated by artwork "Black square", which was created by famous russian artist Kasismir Malevich, and he decided to create an analogue of it as sculpture.

Firstly, he tried to represent 15-metres high black cube in 2005 and was erected in Venice at International Art Exhibition - La Biennalle de Venezia. It was named "Cube Venice 2005". But his application was rejected by Venice authority for politic reasons because they were afraid to offend muslims who could consider it as recostruction of the holiest place of Islam - Kaaba, which is at the center of the Great Mosque in Mecca.

In 2006 Gregor Schneider with his cube was invited to exhibition in Berlin Museum of Modern Art. He renaimed it to "Cube Berlin 2006". But his participation in the exhibition was rejected again at the last moment by the general director of Berlin public museums.

Nadeem Elyas, the president of the central Muslim coulcil in Germany, advocated the cube, and finally, 14-metres high sculpture of black cube have found its place before Museum of Modern Art in Hamburg.

Cubic houses in Rotterdam

A set of innovating houses was built in 1984 on Overblaak Street in Rotterdam in The Netherlands. These houses have shape of cube which were tilted to 45 degrees. The composition consists of 32 cubes, all attached to each other. The houses contain three floors.

This set of buildings was designed by architect Piet Blom. He is best known for his 'Kubuswonigen' buildings built in Helmond and Rotterdam.

Cube houses have interecting feature. They looks like impossible figure from bird's-eye view as it seen in Google Maps. Special covered roofs of cubes looks like snow-covered mountain peaks.
