Spherical artworks by Dick Termes

Dick Termes creates unique type of artworks. While many artists paints on flat canvas he paint his artworks on spheres. He calls them termespheres. Dick uses special six point perspective for his artworks. It's more natural for this type of paintings as traditional perspective with one vanishing point is natural for flat paintings.

The image that we see at termesphere can be imagined as view from inside transparent sphere at real world. Imagine that you are standing inside the glass sphere and drawing on inner surface all what you see around you. Then you take a step out of the sphere and looks at result of your painting from the outside.

It's noticeable influences of Escher at artworks of Dick Termes. We can find likeness between spherical artworks and Escher's lithograph "Hand with reflecting sphere". But in this case we don't see our distorted face but holistic vision of environment.

Crop circles

Many people think that crop circles are result of UFO landing. They appears in darkest nights and we see their traces on grass fields. I will not dispute this opinion, because nobody contact UFO and wind of helicopter propeller looks more realistic reason of natural simple crop circles formation.

Inspired by natural crop circles enthusiasts croppers create own artificial crop circles. Often the more exact name for artificial crop circles is crop figures because they don't have rounded shape but more complicated. Croppers depict various types of figures such as polygons, fractals, artistic images. Every year contest of circle croppers is being taken at http://www.cropcircleconnector.com/

Below there are some examples of crop circles.

Gwen Fisher - Symmetry 1

Symmetry 1
Symmetry 1 shows representations of five of the 17 wallpaper symmetry groups. All 17 of the wallpaper groups can be illustrated with the use of just two grids: the standard square grid and the isometric grid. This work was inspired by M. C. Escher artworks such as "Metamorphosis", "Metamorphosis II" or "Regular Division of the Plane".

Postage card from Jos de Mey

Jos de Mey (August, 2006)
Zig-Zag-Meander-Boog

Today I received a postage card from Belgian artist Jos de Mey. As typical for him there's impossible construction at the drawing and owl sitting on the construction.

Möbius strip

Möbius strip a surface with only one side and only one boundary. It was first described in 1858 by German mathematician August Ferdinand Möbius and co-discovered by Johann Benedict Listing in the same year.

The most known illustration of the surface was created by M.C. Escher in his lithograph "Möbius band II" where read ants crawl by the Möbius strip.

Also it frequently being used in logos. The most famous is international symbol of recycling.

Impossible triangle in Perth

A 13,5 metres aluminium sculpture of impossible triangle was erected in Perth (Australia) in 1999. It's the biggest sculpture of impossible figure in the world. Many people who live near the sculpture do not suspect that it represents impossible figure because it looks like impossible object from single point of view only.

You can see it at Google maps in the center of the round about. You can clearly see the arms of the triangle going off in different directions.

Triple Klein bottle

This is a glass sculpture which consists of three Klein bottles inserted one to each other.

Klein bottle

Klein bottle is one of the strangest surfaces. It has only one side and don't have any boundaries. It was first described in 1882 by German mathematic Felix Klein. The initial name given was "Klein Fla-e-che" (Fläche = Surface). However, this was wrongfully interpreted as Fla-s-che, which ultimately, due to the dominance of the English language in science, led to the adoption of this term in the German language, too.
This object can exist without selfintersections in four dimensional space.

Introduction

There are many artists which are use various mathematical principles in their art. Frequently various polygons and solids are used but there'smany other themes in mathematics for art.

The most common themes in mathematical art are polyhedrons, fractals, tessellations, gold section, impossible figures, strange surfaces.

The most known mathematical artist is M.C. Escher from Holland. Many mathematical laws laid down in his lithographs such as tessellations, polyhedrons and impossible figures.
